Cybersecurity Awareness in Real Estate

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so we have a few tips for you if you are buying or selling a home.

1 – You should never click on links in emails or texts that come from an unknown source – these often have malware attached.

2 – If someone calls you on the phone claiming to be from a company you work with and needs your password, hang up. Never give out passwords or access codes over the phone.

3- If you are talking with someone and the conversation seems to go in a direction that you aren’t comfortable with, finish the call and find a number for the company that you KNOW is a good number and call to verify. (If it’s for a credit card, look at the back of your card, for a title company or bank, find information they personally handed to you). A legitimate company will never be upset that you are protecting yourself and your assets.

4 – We will directly give you the information for the title company we are working with in your transaction, and have you call them – they will not call you to ask for wiring information. This is to protect YOU through the transaction.

Wire Fraud is one of the biggest cyber crimes happening right now, and the FBI and CBI both have dedicated departments investigating wire fraud in real estate transactions.
